Flipped Friday's Topic: Setting of Your Newbery Book

Since we are completing our Newbery books this weekend, I want you to start thinking about the setting of your story.  Watch this video with a family member, and then do the activity that follows.  Even though the video focuses on the genre of mystery, everything in the screencast below can be applied to any genre so think about your Newbery book every time you hear the word "mystery".

Now that you know all about the setting of a story, think about when and where your Newbery story took place.  What is the one setting that stands out in your book?  Is it a setting that is unique?  Does it have a special meaning to the story?  Does most of the story take place there?  Describe your setting using as many of the 5 senses as you can, and then write about the important events that took place there. See my example below if that will help.

Writing Requirements for This Blog Post
1.  Remember to include a topic sentence to introduce the setting.
2.  Write at least 5 sentences to describe your setting and answer the questions above in a way that
     flows smoothly.
3.  Write a closing sentence to wrap it up (no new information).
4.  Write your description so that you can draw a picture of it on Monday in class.

Thimble Summer Setting Description
What was the setting of this Newbery book?  (my topic sentence) One of the reasons I chose to read this book is because it takes place in the year 1938, a time period that has always fascinated me.  When I think of the setting, I think about the outdoors because the main character Garnet spends most of her time there with her friend Citronella.  You can taste the dirt on the road outside her house every time a Ford truck or carriage drives by.  When it's windy, you feel the hot wind smack you in the face as the dust storm completely covers you in dirt.  During a dust storm, you have to cover your eyes with both arms, or it's nearly impossible to get all the dirt out.  The swooshing of the hot air makes you want to get a cold drink of water, but it hasn't rained for so long that there isn't any water to find.  Even though living outside of a small town in Wisconsin was difficult in the 1930s, everyone continued to make a living by farming.  Along this same road is where Garnet ran in her high heels and fancy dress as she ran away from home after a fight with her brother Jay.  As she ran down the road, all she spied were the brown dry cornstalks drooping and dying tan oats for as far as the eye could see.  They lived on the plains so the landscape for the most part was flat.  The hot sun beat down on her, and sweat trickled down her face, reminding her again of the drought and how badly they needed the rain in order to survive.  This was also the road where Garnet's luck began to change.  Many good and bad things happened on this rocky dirt road in the middle of Wisconsin, and you'll learn all about these events when I teach you about my book. (my conclusion sentence)

  1. The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt Setting Description
    By Lindsey

    I loved this book!
My story takes place in New York in 1967 during the time of President Lyndon Johnson and the Vietnam War. The protagonist, Holling spends a lot of his time at his school, Camillo Junior High. In Holling’s homeroom you can hear the groaning of students as they diagram sentences with Mrs. Baker and the rats Sycorax and Caliban squealing in their cages. You can feel the cold air coming in through the air conditioning vent. You can see Doug Swieteck’s brother rushing through the halls, ditching class again through the glass on the door. You can taste the chalk dust wafting in the air. As you feel your hand touch the bottom of your desk you have an unpleasant surprise. Your hand is stuck in a 2 – month - old glob of Danny’s chewed up bazooka bubblegum. Yuck! You can hear Holling mumbling curses that Shakespeare wrote because Mrs. Baker assigned him to read that last week. You see the concerned look on Mrs. Baker's face because her husband Lieutenant Baker who is fighting in the Vietnam War is missing.
That is the average day in Mrs. Baker's room.

  4. Dear Class,
My book was Shiloh. The setting was way down in Friendly, West Virginia, but sometimes people aren't so friendly. Like Judd Travers. Every time Judd comes to Marty's house in his beat-up red truck Shiloh backs up and sticks his tail between his legs.Every morning Marty takes Shiloh half of his breakfast and takes him over to the fields. then Shiloh has to be as quiet as a mouse or else Marty's secret will be reveled. again Marty lies to his parents and brings Shiloh half his dinner. But Ma an Pa are sitting on the porch and Dara Lynn and Becky are playing in the leaves. But the question is will someone find out about Marty's secret? Read the book to find out.

  6. Dear class,
My book is "A Single Shard" and the story is set in Korea. The main character lives under a bridge with a disabled old man named Crane-Man. They make their home close to the river and I imagine he falls asleep to the sound of rushing water every night. During the winter, Tree-Ear moves into a dugout. He roofed the dugout with straw to keep warm. I can almost feel the soft and cold dirt against my skin. He comes to be in Min's work after breaking a pot in Min's store room and is forced to repay the debt by working for Min for a week. Mun ets inspiration for his pots from the luscious garden surrounding his work place. Just from imagining I can see hw mIn's pots resemble a blossom. It is the 12th century and Tree-Ear is trying to deliver his master Min's pot to the roya emissary over rough, dangerous terrain trying to reach the king's palace without dying from the hazards of robbers, cliff hanging, dehydration, and starvation.

  7. Dear class,
my book is called Everything on a waffle. It takes place in a restaurant that a lady named Miss Bowzer is eventually going to be Primrose's friend. Miss Bowzer is very touchy. Miss Bowzer is a lady who works at a restaurant that serves everything on a waffle like if you ordered a stake you would get it on a waffle. And that's why it is called everything on a waffle. I think Miss Bowzer hears a lot of things wrong like when she takes orders from customers. Primrose is a character in the story everything on a waffle. She has "hair the color of carrots". She lives in Coal Harbour,British Columbia were she lost her parents. And if you what to learn more about the story everything on a waffle you have to read the book yourself.

    Sincerely,

  8. Dear class,
My book was bridge to terabithia and my setting is terabithia. That one setting terabithia stands out because it's a magical place that Jess and Leslie make up and magical creature come out of there minds and put into there terabithia. Yes it's a setting that is unique because of the creatures and the tree house and it's unique because of the rope. Yes it has special meaning to the story because someone dies there creature try to eat them there and they become friend there. Jess falls in love with Leslie there. They fight creatures there. Yes most of the time it take place there. About 50% in terabithia. About 25% in jesses or leslies house. And about 25% at school. Also the setting is meaningful to Jess because they go troll hunting together.

  9. Dear Class and Miss Shaw,
My newberry book was "Old Yeller" by Fred Gipson,
In My book the story takes place at Birdsong creek in Texas, in the late 1860's right after the Civil War.
Texas was full of wild game and fertile ground.
Travis (who is the main charecter) lives on a farm with a little brother, a mom, and his dog (Old Yeller).
On the farm there is the worst smell you could ever imagine, coming from the wild hogs.
If you were on Birdsong creek farm You would want to go exploring, because there is a cave, and many other fun places.
Birdsong creek got it's name by all of the mocking birds singing in the white blooming bushes.
That's the adventure's of Travis and his dog.

    Sincerely,
    Percy

  10. Dear class,
My book is Dogsong and is written by Gary Paulsen. The setting is in the Tundra, where the cold ice and snow is too much too bare with just a winter jacket. Most of the time it's bare and has no trees.
The wind is cold and stings your face. The snow is piled high and ice is very thick. If you fell in the water you would freeze because it's so cold. My book doesn't really say when it takes place so that is my setting.
    Sincerely,
    Althea

  11. Dear class,
My Newbery book was” Sounder” by William H. Armstrong.
My setting was in Georgia around the 1970’s
The boy and Sounder and his Father (the main characters) find food for the family.
They can’t find enough food so his father starts stealing food from other people. Then his father gets caught then he goes to jail.

The best smell you could smell is the boy’s mother cooking sausage and hambone.
The coolest sight you would see would be the long prairie and forests.
You would hear birds chirping, dogs barking and the wind whistling.
The taste of cool water from the creek and the taste of sausages. Yum!
You can feel the warm air, the soft coon hide and rough ground.

That's the story of the boy and the the great coon dog Sounder!

    Regards
    Raghava

  13. My book is The Giver by Lois Lowry. The setting is in the Community where nobody can see color, have feelings or lie. Everyone in the community has to live by the rules or else they get released. My favorite setting in the book is when Jonas decides to leave the community and bikes many miles over many days. When he gets far enough away, he starts seeing color, animals and has feelings.

It was one of the strangest and most interesting books I've ever read.

    Sincerely,
    Andrew

  16. Dear Class,
We are supposed to write a setting description. Not a summary of the book. Everybody's paragraphs are very descriptive but some aren't about the setting of main events.
    Happy setting describing!

  19. Dear Class,
The Newbery book I chose was "The Dark Frigate". It takes place in the early 1600s, when the U.S colonies were starting to form. It mostly takes place at sea, but sometimes the main character's ship lands and then it's on land. That's just a little bit about the setting of my book. I'll see you on Monday.

  20. My book is called " The Watsons Go To Birmingham"
The setting is 1963 ( so during civil rights) in the f Flint Michigan, but there is also a little in Birmingham Alabama. The book is told over seasons but the most important parts are in the freezing cold winter. In the book the main character Kenny, brother gets sent away to the Sizzling heat of Birmingham. In Birmingham there is NEVER a cloud in sight, but Flint on the other hand... In Flint if you have enough Winter gear and are lucky enough to not get frozen, the winter should be a breeze. A really cold breeze.

  22. Dear Miss Shaw and our class,
My book is called Ginger Pye and it is written by Eleanor Estes. My book takes place in a town called Cranbury, Connecticut, halfway between New York City and Boston. It happened in 1919 when you could buy a dress or get a full dinner for 10 cents. The main event of this novel takes place on a cold, damp November day. The Pye family had just finished tasting their Thanksgiving feast when their dog, Ginger Pye, is kidnapped. The Pye family could no longer see the kidnapped dog who had vanished so quietly. Ginger, the dog, was found and brought back home on Jerry Pye’s birthday which was May 29th.
    Sincerely,
    Jeremy
P.S. The town of Cranbury was originally called West Haven which was renamed by the author of this book Eleanor Estes.
