First Immigrants to the United States

Did you know that some historians and scientiests believe that Native Americans were the first immigrants to travel to North America? They believe they migrated from another continent many many years ago. How did they get here, and why did they come? There are many theories out there. Which one will you believe?

Here is what you will do:

1. Watch the two videos linked here about one theory.
    Audio and Video Number One
    Video Number Two

2. With a parent, find at least one other theory about how the Native Americans originated or migrated to the U.S.

3. Write a letter to the class on the blog.
     a. Tell which theory you predict to be true. This will be your opinion.
     b. Give at least 3 facts to support your opinion. What facts support your opinion?
     c. Leave a link to the website or video you found about a second theory.

Here is an example on a slightly different topic, but it shows you my opinion and 3 facts to support it.

Dear Class,

I predict that the wooly mammoths migrated to North America over a land bridge.  Why do I believe this?  Thousands of years ago, there was a piece of land that connected Asia to North America.  Based on the knowledge I have about this giant furry mammal, I know they wouldn't have been able to swim in the ocean.  I also know they wouldn't have been able to build boats since they were animals.  Therefore, the only conclusion I can draw is that they crossed the land bridge so that they could escape their predators.

I found this information on a video.  Here is the link:____________________________ (leave your link).  I really think you should watch it too.

Sincerely,
Miss Shaw

  2. Dear class,

I believe that Plains Native Americans, such as the Anishinabe, from which I am descended, had lots of food. A reason I think that is because not only had open plains to hunt, but also the glaciers, when they melted created lakes for them to fish and gather water, and they could scoop up the water in baskets and water the crops that they were growing, such as potatoes, corn and squash. Based on those three facts, I believe this statement is true before contact with the whites. If you are reading my post, I hope you found it useful, and until I see you in class,Happy Weekend!

  3. Dear Class,
i think neither of these theorys are true, i think the first Americans came 9,000 years ago, he is called Kenwick man, 3 facts are 1. his nose jumps off his face, like in Europeans, which supports that he is from Europe. 2. he has a ancient spearpoint in his pelvis, which proves he is not a native american. He was carbon dated, and it was found it was 25,000 years old!. lastly, he has NO genetic realation to any native american tribes, so he must've came to north america through another way other than a land bridge. 5. Dear Class,
My theory is that the native americans originated here, and did not cross the land bridge or come from Asia. A fact that supports this theory is that, some scientist found a stone artifact that was crafted about 50,000 years ago, that means that there were already native americans here before the land bridge eroded, also like other species like bison and wolfs. My 3rd fact is that , a lot of native americans died of sickness when they came in contact with the Europeans, but if they originated from Europe or Asia they wouldn't have gotten sick when exposed or coming into contact with Europeans.

  6. Dear Miss Shaw,

I think that the Native Americans migrated from Africa to Asia then to North America because game was moving northwards first to northern Asia then across the land bridge to North America and then spread across what is now Canada and the northern USA during the Ice Age. The different tribes spread out across the USA at different times making settlements in different locations where they thought game was the most plentiful. (They couldn't have searched it on Google or anything!!!). I think this is true because the fact is that many Native American tribal grounds are in Canada and the Northern USA. Some tribes, however, migrated to the same place another tribe had already settled. Then the tribes got real bloody, they fought for the land that they had settled in for game and land to live in. Some evidence to support this is that many Native American tribes were warrior tribes. Some Warrior tribes are the Santee Sioux, the Lakota Sioux, and the Dakota Sioux. Many tribes feared the warrior tribes. The reason I think that the tribes migrated during the last Ice Age is because only then they would have been able to walk over the glaciers to get to what is now modern day Alaska and down into Canada then into the Northern USA. 7. Dear class,
I predict that the Native Americans migrated to Alaska for two reasons, One, because they could not find\hunt game, Second, the European’s migration pattern. One fact is that most tribes migrated to the western part of the country because of Andrew Jackson’s American Indian Removal Act of 1830. Before that there was a bloody war many Native Americans they fought and struggled and finally they got their freedom from the white men.

  10. Dear Class,
I think that something called the Solutrean Hypothesis might be the correct theory on how the Native Americans came to the united states. I think they came from Europe. This took place when Europe was connected to Greenland and Canada. Some evidence to prove that they came from Europe is that clovis tools (Spear points made out of bone, stone or ivory used for hunting) were found near to where the Native Americans first settled. Clovis tools found with Native Americans were made from using similar tools to the Solutrean tools of France. Some more artifacts that were similar to the European ones were found near the part of the Delmarva peninsula in Maryland where the native American people first settled. The hypothesis suggests they traveled during the Ice Age. They traveled in small boats using similar skills as modern day Inuits.

  11. Dear Miss Shaw,
One of the other theories I discovered was that the Native Americans came by boat across the Pacific Ocean from Asia and island hopped on their way to North America. They did this because they were following fish and other food sources in the ocean. The Native Americans had great navigational skills which they passed on by telling stories. They also built amazing boats. They traveled long distances at a time and used their navigational skills to find their way.

  12. I believe that the native Americans migrated to the U.S. over what is called a land bridge. Another fact is that the land bridge that existed 18,000 years ago has gradually disappeared with rising sea level. Lastly, geneticists have found that groups from Asia traveled over the Bering Strait into North America in at least three separate migrations beginning more than 15,000 years ago.

First,DNA evidence shows relationship between people from Asia and North American Indians. Second, we know there was a land bridge between the two continents long ago. finally, the languages spoken by the two are similar.

I believe that the Native Americans traveled here by boats. 3 facts that support my theory include: 1) Anthropologists think Americans populated too quickly for the land to be covered with water as in the other idea. 2) the Native Americans were good boat people. 3) Native Americans liked to fish and they followed the fish until they got to America.

  16. I think that the native americans traveled from Asia to North America because there was a land bridge in between Asia and North America. It lasted for over 10,000 years. Sea levels were low enough to cross so that there was land between North America and Asia. At that time, 20,000 years ago or more Native Americans were wandering hunters. They may have been looking for new hunting grounds

  17. Dear Class: I don't believe they came from Asia. There is no scientific proof that they came from Asia and it would have been difficult for them to travel over the Bearing Strait and survive as the land was barren. So if the land was barren how could people from Asia travel to America without dying. They probably originated in America plus they found the Clovis arrowhead which originated in Europe.

I believe that the Native Americans came from a land bridge between Russia and Alaska, because their DNA matches people from Asia, there was an ice age at the time of when they came over the land bridge so the water froze up and they could easily walk across. Lastly, because they were hunter gatherers at that time which meant that they wanted to migrate to different areas like the Americas.

  19. Dear class,

I belive that not all of the Native Americans traveled here at the same time, nor did they all come from the same place. You can't just take every tribe, and ship them off on a boat, right? Anyway, as I was saying, mabye some tribes came from Asia, but there is no proof that every single tribe did! I mean, some tribes have diffrent languages, and a different lifestyle, how could they all come from the same place if there so different? One theory i belive to be true is that some Native Americans traveled by boat across the Pacific, not in one single journey but island hopping, and populating one island to the next.Hawaii for example is halfway from Asia to North America. The historical identification of Polynesian people is proof of my theory.

  22. I predict that the Native Americans came over here through land bridge: Beringia. It makes sense how land grew, the land uprised and the water went down, creating Beringia. That video also shows proof. I think this all begain in Africa, the prey that they ate moved to India, then it moved up into eastern Russia (aka Siberia) they hung out there for a while then they prey moved into Beringia, and crossed into North America. There were so many new resources that even after there prey died out they stayed there. Some stayed in Alaska and Canada, such as the Inuit people, others came down here such as the Chinook, other went don to Mexico, and South America such as the Aztec, Maya, and the Inca.
