I need your help! On Thursday we read about the American Indian Movement that was one of the Civil Rights movements in our history. As I told you today, I need your help in creating a digital timeline for a class I'm teaching to other teachers next week.
So here is your task. With at least one parent, read the encyclopedia entry that is linked here about the American Indian Movement. Then watch the American Indian Movement and the U.S. Government video that is linked here. Discuss what you learn after doing both activities with your parent. Then choose one date from the encyclopedia article about the movement that you think was the most important in helping the Native Americans gain their rights.
Write a letter to me on our blog, and tell me about that year.
- What year was it?
- What event happened during that year for the Native Americans?
- Why was this so important?
Sincerely,
Miss Shaw
Extra! Extra! Read all about it! If you'd like to earn EXTRA CREDIT, you have 2 options.
1. Find a picture with a parent that goes with the event you wrote about, and ask your parents to help
you send it to my e-mail address.
2. Find a video with your parent that goes with your event, and include the link in your letter to me
on the blog.
it is important because all people should have equal rights. it was in the 1970s. they were forced to move to a reservation.
ReplyDeleteWho is this from? What year was the most important, and why was the most important year for the American Indian Movement? Add this to your post.
DeleteThis is from Sawyer
DeleteDear Miss Shaw,
ReplyDeletei think September 9 1969 was a very important year.
This is because this is the year the Native Americans took Alcatraz island.
This is important because this helped them get their land back if they didnt do it they might`ve not gotten their land back.
From Jung Haye
Dear Miss Shaw,
ReplyDeleteI think that November of 1971 is important because almost 1,000 Native Americans marched at Washington, D.C. at took over a building, and the BIA was founded.
Hoping you find this useful,
Brendan
Dear Miss. Shaw,
ReplyDeleteI think that 1978 was a very important year for the Native Americans because that was the year that the US Congress passed AIRFA (Or the American Indian Religious Freedom Act). I think AIRFA was very important to the Native Americans because it was the first time that the US Government acknowledged that they should have the freedom to practice their own beliefs and customs.
I hope you find this useful!!!!!
Sincerely,
Lindsey M.
Dear Miss Shaw,
ReplyDeleteI think November 9, 1969 is a very important year. I think this because the American Indians sailed a boat to take over their former land Alcatraz. They took back Alcatraz because it was their former land that they were forced to move out of. And to ask the Government to give back some land because the United States took all of the Native American's land.
sincerely,
Althea!
Dear Miss Shaw,
ReplyDeleteI think 1978 was a vey important year because this was the year where they got there results from Alcatraz, Wounded Knee, and Pine Ridge. The congress passed the American Indian Religious Freedom Act which allows "Native Americans' right to access sacred grounds and legal rights to practice their traditional religions". It is important because everybody who lives in the United States should have the right of freedom.
Sincerely,
Percy Olken-Hunt
Please explain what you meant by "this was the year where they got there results from Alcatraz, Wounded Knee, and Pine Ridge."
DeleteDear Miss Shaw,
ReplyDeleteI think 1978 was an important year for the Native American Indians.
This was the year Congress passed the American Indian Religious Freedom Act. (AIRFA) It gave the American Indians rights for things such as access to sacred grounds and freedom to practice their religions. This is important because they finally got the freedom they had been fighting for and deserved.
SINCERELY,
Aaron
Dear Miss Shaw,
ReplyDeleteI think 1978 was an important year for the Native American Indians because of the Alcatraz. This was when the congress passed.
Sincererly,
Ngawang Shrub
I'd like you to add to this because I'm confused about why 1978 was an important year. You need to write about details and facts to show that your opinion is the best.
Deletehow do i add?
DeleteDear Miss Shaw,
ReplyDeleteI think that 1978 was important for the american indians because of the Alcatraz
from Diego Roman
Please explain this. I don't understand the reasons why you think 1978 was so important. What was Alcatraz, and why was that important to the Native Americans?
Deletediego, sorry to say, i dont get it. it was 1 sentance!!

Dear Miss Shaw,
ReplyDeleteI think that November 9, 1969 becuse the native americans took over Alcatraz. I think that this is important because that showed that the native americans wanted there land back.
From Archer
Dear Miss Shaw,
ReplyDeleteI think 1971 was the best year for the Native Americans because...
1) On that year 1000 angry Native American protesters marched at Washington D.C, The march was called The Trail of Broken Treaties.
2)The Native Americans caused over $2 million worth of damage and the Native Americans presented President Nixon
with 20 demands for immediate action.
3)Then Nixon administration provided $66,000 in transportation money for a peaceful end
to the takeover.
Regards,Raghava
You have good facts. Just make sure you are always using your own words.

ReplyDeleteDear Miss Shaw,
I think November 9, 1969 was the most important date for the Native American Indians to gain more rights. This is the first day the Indians moved into the island of Alcatraz. This wasn't there island but they decided to claim it theirs because they were not treated fairly in the US. They wouldn't leave the island so the government shut off the power and took away fresh water. This was a big fight that the Native Americans took on against the government. This was an important time for them.
Sincerely,
Jake Hankinson
Dear Miss Shaw,
ReplyDeleteI think 1978 was the most important year for helping Native Americans gain their rights when the American Indian Religious Freedom Act was passed. After all the controversial things that happened with Alcatraz and all the shootings, they finally were given some rights.
Sincerely,
Andrew Johnson
In 1975, two FBI agents in an unmarked car and in plain clothes were shot and killed in Pine Ridge near an AIM camp.
ReplyDeleteI think this was important because the AIM group had it's most important leader sent to jail. Many people think the government wanted the AIM to fall apart and after this event the AIM was never as strong again.

Dear Miss Shaw,
ReplyDeleteI think 1978 was the most important year because the American Indian Religious Freedom Act (AIRFA) was passed. The AIRFA made it so that all Native Americans were able to practice their traditional religions.
Sincerely,
Jeremy
Dear Miss Shaw,
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the encyclopedia page and the many events in the history of AIM, I really don't think there was any event that helped the Native Americans gain any rights. I think this because even after AIRFA was passed they amended it to be a suggestion instead of it being a law and this did not give the Native Americans any legal claim to their sacred land. From my research, although the bill was reintroduced to the congress it has still not been made into a law.

Dear Miss Shaw
ReplyDeleteI believe that in 1971 was an important date for AIM because it was the year the lead the Tail of Broken Treaties march which took place in Washington D.C included over 2000 of angry American Indians though they believed in "peaceful" protest they caused over 2 Million dollars to the BIA building they also demanded over 20 different changes to president Nixon yet the successful part of there march was the publicity and media getting people up to date about all that is happening about American Indians
sincerely
Grace
Hi, Grace. Did you mean they caused over $2 million dollars in dmanage to the BIA building? Wow! I guess it wasn't so peaceful, was it?

Miss Shaw
The year 1968 is the most important for the Native Americans because that year AIM was formed. AIM shaped the Native American Rights Movement in the 1970's and will continue to influence people in the present and the future. I am inspired to visit Washington DC and visit the BIA while I am there. I am part Native American, 10% Crow Indian and 10% Souix. I believe in equality for all.
ReplyDeleteSincerely,
Madison Mularky
ReplyDeleteThe year of 1968 was an important year because the aim was formed. It was important beacause with out the aim formedtheir will be no equal rights.Sure hope you do well.
Sincerely,
Abdi Sheikh
Dear Miss Shaw,
ReplyDeleteI think the year 1969 was important becuse that is when the AIM took over Alcatraz Island. Did you know that they did 2 million dollars in damage to the BIA building?
Sincerely,
Alejandro
Dear Miss Shaw,
ReplyDeleteI learned a lot about native Americans and I would love to learn much more. But for now I'll tell you what I know. I chose 1969 the year the native Americans took over the island Alcatraz. I think that this time was so important to the native Americans because that was a place that was used throughout history to punish and isolate people. It was one of the ways that helped them gain there civil rights. I can't wait to learn more about the native Americans at school!
Sincerely,
Nicole
Dear Miss Shaw on November 9, 1969 Native American supporters set out to symbolically claim the island of Alcatraz for Indians of all tribes November 20 it became the longest prolonged occupation by Native Americans of a federal facility or federal property. It's importamt becuase it's a part of important history. Sincerely Emily
